For more than 100 years we have been distinguished by our reputation of providing world-class service and unparalleled technical knowledge.  We are independent and employee-owned, with strong local, national and international ties.

Our beginnings:

In the early 1900s, M.C. Harrison, an insurance agent originally from New England, opened an insurance agency in Portland, Oregon. He departed Portland for San Francisco in 1907 and turned the business over to his nephew C.P. Sargent, who was later joined by his cousin Gilbert H. Durham.  At that time business became increasingly more marine industry oriented and Sargent left the company turning operations over to Durham.

At the end of World War I, Donald H. Bates, a Navy aviator, began working in the marine insurance industry in San Francisco. By 1919, Bates relocated to Portland to open a branch office for his employer.  Shortly thereafter Gilbert Durham offered Bates a partnership, thus formally establishing Durham and Bates specializing in Marine Industry Insurance.

Though we have certainly changed and evolved over the last century, we have remained an organization committed to providing unparalleled service to our clients and to creating extraordinary relationships with our clients, associates and business partners.

Today, we are proud to provide insurance and risk management services in a large variety of industry specialties.
